Review methodology

Every score on this site is computed from the table below. None of them is typed in by hand, and the weights were fixed before the products were scored.

We own one of the products we score

This website is operated by Innopulse Consulting GmbH, which also operates SubTracker.io. That is a real conflict of interest, and no methodology makes it go away. What a methodology can do is make our judgement checkable.

Three things follow from that:

  • We publish the weights before the results, so we cannot retro-fit criteria to produce an outcome we like.
  • Every score is derived by code from a structured feature matrix. There is no field anywhere in this codebase where a human writes a final score.
  • We keep SubTracker in the comparison rather than removing it. Removing it would look cleaner and tell you less.

As of the current model SubTracker places #3 of 9. If that ever changes to first place, it will be because the matrix changed — and the matrix is on this page.

What this is — and is not

This is a documented capability assessment. We read vendor pricing pages, app-store listings, privacy policies and published documentation, and we record what they say in a structured matrix.

It is not a hands-on test programme. We have not run paid accounts on eighteen products, we have not timed onboarding with a stopwatch, and we have not opened support tickets with every vendor. Earlier versions of this site said we had. That was wrong and we have removed it.

Criteria we deliberately do not score

  • Ease of use. Cannot be assessed honestly without sustained hands-on use of every product. We have not done that across all 18, so we do not score it.
  • Customer support quality. Would require opening real support tickets with every vendor and measuring responses. We have not done that, so we do not score it.

The eight criteria and their weights

Scoring criteria and their weights, applied identically to every product
CriterionWeight
Privacy & data handlingWhether the app can operate without harvesting your full banking history, and what its policy says about sharing or monetising data.15%
Bank-connection optionalityWhether you can use the product WITHOUT linking a bank account. Apps that require a bank link score lower here — not because bank sync is bad, but because it removes the user's choice.10%
Platform availabilityWeb, iOS and Android coverage. Single-platform products score lower because your data becomes device-bound.12%
EU/EEA suitabilityAvailability to European users, multi-currency handling, and whether the product is designed around European banking and consumer reality.13%
Core subscription trackingRecording subscriptions with amount, currency, billing interval, renewal date and category.15%
Renewal remindersWhether the product warns you before a renewal charge, and through which channel.10%
Reporting & data exportSpending breakdowns, annual projections, and the ability to get your own data back out.10%
Pricing & valueCost of the paid tier relative to what it unlocks, and whether a genuinely usable free tier exists.15%

How we handle facts we could not verify

An unverified fact is recorded as unknown, not guessed. Unknown criteria are excluded from a product’s average rather than scored as zero — punishing a product for a gap in our research would be unfair.

But excluding unknowns creates the opposite problem: a product whose weak points we failed to document would float to the top. So a product only receives a rank position when all eight criteria could be verified (100% coverage). Partially documented products still show a score and their coverage figure, but they sit outside the league table.

Currently 9 products are fully documented and ranked; 9 are not.
